All Saints Episcopal Day School Gathers Local Leaders

Middle School Celebrates Fifth Annual Month of the Young Adolescent

October 30, 2012, HOBOKEN, NJ — On Tuesday October 30th, at 8:30 am, community leaders including members of the Hoboken City Council, clergy from local churches and temples, Board and Vestry members of All Saints and the Jubilee Center along with middle school parents will gather at All Saints Episcopal Day School for the fifth annual Month of the Young Adolescent Leadership Summit.  Several middle school students will present speeches and letters they have written to leaders in Hoboken to express their concerns about our world and their hopes for the future of our community.  In addition to broad concerns, students will focus on issues surrounding the dangers of texting and driving, a national concern.

This work is done in honor of the Month of the Young Adolescent, a movement promoted by the Association for Middle Level Education to recognize and set aside an entire month to promote awareness of the issues facing children ages 10 to 15.  All Saints Episcopal Day School was very pleased five years ago when both the city of Hoboken and the State of New Jersey adopted the proclamation to recognize October as Month of the Young Adolescent. 

The key messages for the celebration are:

  • The importance of parents being knowledgeable about young adolescents and being actively involved in their lives;
  • The understanding that healthy bodies plus healthy minds equal healthy young adolescents;
  • The realization that the education young adolescents experience during this formative period of life will, in large measure, determine the future for all citizens; and
  • The knowledge that every young adolescent should have the opportunity to pursue his or her dreams and aspirations, and post-secondary education should be a possibility for all.

In addition to this Leadership Summit, which includes the student presentations and round table discussions with local leaders, All Saints has had social and educational activities throughout the month of October for their middle school students, their families, and the greater community.

All Saints Episcopal Day School, an interdenominational school in Hoboken, New Jersey, has nurtured academic excellence and social responsibility for children through enriched experiences in an urban community since 1985. Founded with 16 preschoolers, All Saints now enrolls more than 220 students from Nursery through Eighth Grade. The school's professional teaching faculty offers a core curriculum of language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, physical education and health; as well as an array of special subjects, including Spanish, art, music, dance and community service.
