Residents of Morris County and surrounding communities are invited to attend a Family Fun Day on Sunday, June 28, 2015, from noon to 4 p.m., at Central Park of Morris County, 91 Central Ave. The event, to be held rain or shine, will celebrate this year’s 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), signed into law in July 1990.
Those attending will have the opportunity to experience firsthand Morris County’s fully accessible ball field and playground, while gathering valuable information presented by vendors about a range of available disability services and resources in the community. The event is being sponsored by DAWN Center for Independent Living in conjunction with the Morris County Department of Human Services and the Morris County Park Commission.
Entertainment, a variety of family friendly activities and an assortment of food trucks will round out the event, which promises a day of fun for everyone. You’ll also get the chance to root for your favorite team during a competitive softball game between the Morris County Park Police and local members of the Wheelchair Sports Federation.
According to the organizers, the day’s activities are a fun and fitting way to observe the significance of the American with Disabilities Act (ADA), the comprehensive federal law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, government services, telecommunications, as well as access to all public and private places that are open to the general public.
“This event will provide an opportunity to bring together all members of the community not only to acknowledge the importance of this historic event, but also to recognize the efforts of the Morris County Freeholders and Park Commission towards creating inclusive opportunities for all,” explains Carmela Slivinski, executive director at DAWN Center for Independent Living. “While we have made significant strides towards inclusion and equal opportunity for all, there is still much more work that needs to be done. This day will be an opportunity to acknowledge the past as well as look to the day when people with disabilities have access to the same choices, opportunities, and civil rights as people without disabilities.”
