Dr. Marion Nestle To Speak on Food Choices and Obesity

NEWARK : In conjunction with the interactive, family exhibition Generation Fit: Steps to a Healthier Lifestyle, the Newark Museum will host a fitness and nutrition festival on Saturday, March 15  from noon- 4:30 pm. The event, which is free with Museum admission, includes a film screening, activities and a lecture by author-activist Dr. Marion Nestle.       

                                                                                                                                  

Nestle, a Paulette Goddard Professor in the Department of Nutrition, Food Studies, Public Health and Professor of Sociology at New York University; and author of Food Politics and Why Calorie Count, will speak at 2 pm about the scientific, economic and social influences on food choice and obesity, with an emphasis on the role of food marketing. A book signing will follow the lecture. 

Activities throughout the day include Zumba® , yoga and chair exercise fitness classes; garden composting; a burning calories lab; BMI screenings; and fitness level assessments.  The film Weight of the Nation/Consequence will be screened from 4-5 pm. The first film in “The Weight of the Nation” four-part series, it examines the obesity epidemic and explores the serious health consequences of being overweight or obese.   The film will be introduced by Barbara Mintz, MS, RD, Assistant Vice President of Wellness at Newark Beth Israel Medical; and Mary Koch, RN, MSN, CNOR at Newark Beth Israel Medical, with a Q&A to follow.  The film is courtesy of HBO.

Generation Fit: Steps to a Healthier Lifestyle is presented in partnership with The Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey and the Roche Foundation, with additional support for education programs provided by JPMorgan Chase & Co.
