Colleges in New Jersey

The New Jersey Council of County Colleges provides leadership for the state’s 19 community colleges. These two-year schools serve New Jersey’s 21 counties, with more than 400,000 students enrolled at more than 70 campuses across the state. Each community college strives to provide high-quality and reasonably priced transfer programs, occupational programs, continuing education courses, community service programs and business support services to the region. Students can choose from more than 1,700 degree and certificate programs as well as non-credit courses and customized workforce training programs, all of which were created in response to local and statewide needs.

Graduates of New Jersey’s community colleges may decide to enter the workforce immediately, or they may choose to transfer to four-year colleges and universities through the state’s well-articulated transfer agreements. Data from the National Student Clearinghouse reveal that 38 percent of all students who earned a bachelor’s degree from a New Jersey college or university had previously completed courses at a community college.

Public Colleges and Universities in New Jersey

The New Jersey Association of State Colleges and Universities (ASCU) represents the state’s eight public colleges and universities. In 2012, these schools enrolled close to 108,000 students – 97 percent of whom were New Jersey residents – and awarded about 45 percent of all the bachelor’s degrees in the state. According to ASCU, New Jersey state colleges and universities rank third in the nation for productivity.

Unlike the public higher education systems in many states, four-year public colleges and universities in New Jersey are highly autonomous, affording a great deal of latitude for each institution to determine its own policies and procedures.

Public Research Universities in New Jersey

New Jersey is also home to three large public research universities: New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT); Rowan University; and Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. NJIT offers 125 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in six specialized schools, and ranks number one in New Jersey in awarding engineering degrees to African-American and Hispanic students. Through 13 schools and colleges, Rowan University offers 85 bachelor’s degree programs, 65 master’s degree programs, 2 doctoral degree programs, and 2 professional programs.

With more than 65,000 students from all 50 states and more than 115 countries, Rutgers is the state’s preeminent, comprehensive public institution of higher education. A Big Ten school, Rutgers has three major campuses that house 33 schools and colleges, boasting more than 100 undergraduate majors and more than 200 graduate programs and degrees.

Online Colleges in New Jersey

New Jersey college students can take advantage of online education at just about every school in the state, from community colleges to public four-year schools to private research universities. Bergen Community College provides fully online associate degrees in health sciences, marketing, psychology and other subjects. Thomas Edison State College offers a wide range of fully online associate, bachelor’s and master’s degree and certificate programs, as well as more than 400 online courses. Caldwell College, an independent school, has more than 20 online education programs, including a bachelor’s degree in psychology, an RN-to-BSN degree, and a master’s degree in educational administration. Even religious institutions like the two-year Assumption College for Sisters offer online courses.

In addition, a handful of for-profit colleges in New Jersey offer online courses and programs in subjects such as accounting, education, environmental science and information technology. As one example, DeVry University has campuses as well as online offerings in the state, with degree programs at different levels and majors ranging from liberal arts to game programming.
